The 21st century has seen a constant changing of the shape of the Anglophone postcolonial world. Especially postcolonial Nigerian experiences are of interest as Nigeria is a, if not even the most striking, example of a former (British) African colony being about to become a global player. Not only has globalisation led to a reshaping of life in Nigeria itself, but, on a global scale, issues of Afropolitanism in the Nigerian diaspora has resulted in a spreading and reflection of Nigerian (diasporic) experiences in economy, literature and (pop)culture. Against this backdrop, Nigeria was chosen as a reference culture to be discussed in the Qualifikationsphase of North-Rhine-Westphalia (e.g. Voices from the African Continent: Focus on Nigeria).
Hence, this workshop aims at addressing the major challenges and chances of teaching Nigeria in the EFL classroom, takes the perspective of literary and cultural studies (i.e. Fachwissenschaft) as base and aims at interconnecting it to major concepts and theories of teaching literature and culture (i.e. Fachdidaktik). In this regard, we will discuss ideas and models how to actively teach Nigeria in the advanced EFL classroom.
