This is not a missionary paper. Praying is a widespread form of communication, and with strong cultural implications. Learners of foreign languages and all those who want to cross cultural borders should know how to behave when praying comes up as a topic. In Anglo-Saxon countries, public praying amongst Christians is rather more common than in most of Germany. And again, praying is more common in other religions than in liberalized Christendom. Visitors to Anglo-Saxon countries, if they are staying with families, may well be asked to say grace before a meal or to accompany a home ceremony with a short prayer. This means they need to know how to behave in such a situation and what (not) to say. Visitors may also quite naturally be invited to accompany the family to church on Sunday, an activity which may entail a short self-presentation to the congregation, again with an invitation by the priest or preacher to finish with a short prayer.
